COPD & Asthma Update For PNs

Aimed at:

Practice Nurses who manage patients with COPD and Asthma.

Asthma is now one of the commonest long term disorders with an estimated 5.4 million sufferers in the UK, the majority of who experience regular symptoms. Improved care could avoid an estimated 75% of hospital admissions and prevent at least 90% of deaths.

The COPD National Strategy Document stresses the importance of health care professionals understanding the risk factors for development of COPD and offering suitable interventions and management of those individuals.

This one day will provide a brief overview of diagnosis, symptoms and management of both Asthma and COPD. There will also be a discussion on the latest inhalers and cost effective prescribing.

Immunisation And Injection Technique Training For HCAs

Aimed at:

This course is designed to enable HCAs in general practice to obtain the knowledge and skills they need to administer flu, pneumonia and shingles vaccines to adults, nasal flu to children and B12 injections to adults.

The course consists of 2 study days followed by a period of supervised practice with a nurse mentor. Competency is assessed by a multiple choice/short answer test at the end of the course and a formal competency assessment by the nurse mentor in practice.

The content is based on the guidelines ‘National Minimum Standards and Core Curriculum for Immunisation Training of Healthcare Support Workers’ (Public Health England 2015).

The training encompasses:
  • Legal issues and the role of the HCA in immunization
  • The immune system
  • Types of vaccine and how they work
  • Contraindications to immunization
  • An overview of flu, pneumonia, shingles, pernicious anaemia
  • Injection technique including a practical session
  • Storage and handling of vaccines

Introduction To Spirometry

Aimed at:

Health care assistants working in general practice.

This one day course attempts to deliver a broad assessment of the main issues involved in performing spirometry in primary practice, indications for doing spirometry, how to undertake the tests, how to interpret the results and details on quality control and further training. This workshop will equip the Health Care Assistant to have a better understanding and be able to perform spirometry assessments by a theoretical and practical approach. They will need to complete a competency assessment back at their practice. The trainer is Lindi Staunton, a Respiratory Nurse Specialist and a Member of the Association for Respiratory Technology and Physiology.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the session delegates will:

  • Have a basic understanding of the function of the airways
  • Understand how disease can impair lung function and affect quality of life
  • Understand reasons for spirometry
  • Be able to perform spirometry according to the guidelines
  • Understand the significance of smoking cessation to reduce lung function decline

NB: Delegates will be required to bring along with them, a spirometer that they are currently using. This is to ensure that the delegate is using the machine correctly & taking correct readings.

A full day course aimed at staff who are either new to dispensing, just starting a dispensing qualification, or standing in as a dispenser on an ad hoc basis covering for holidays or sickness.
